What is working memory, and can you train it?

1. The workbench of your mind
Working memory is the small mental workspace where you hold information while you actually use it. Doing a sum in your head, following spoken directions, keeping the first half of a sentence in mind while reading the second half: all of it happens on this workbench. It is not where memories live long term. It is where thinking gets done right now.
2. Not the same as short-term memory
The two are often mixed up. Short-term memory just holds things briefly, like a phone number you repeat until you dial it. Working memory holds things while you work with them: reversing that number, adding it up, comparing it to another. Holding is passive; working is active. That extra work is why working memory is the better predictor of how well people read, reason and learn.
3. Why a small workspace runs your day
Almost every demanding task queues up at this one desk. Reading comprehension, mental arithmetic, weighing two options, even holding back an impulse while you consider a better response: each one borrows working memory. When researchers measure it in children and adults, its capacity tracks school results and problem-solving ability more closely than almost any other single measure.
4. It overloads faster than you think
The workbench is small. Most people can juggle about three to five separate pieces of information before something falls off. That is why a twelve-digit number feels impossible, why interruptions are so costly, and why following a recipe with six new steps makes you read it four times. Overload is not a personal failing; it is the normal limit of the system.
5. Reduce the load before you raise the capacity
The quickest wins come from using the workbench well. Write things down instead of carrying them in your head. Break big tasks into steps small enough to hold comfortably. Group details into chunks, the way a phone number becomes three blocks instead of eleven digits. And do one thing at a time: every task switch sweeps the bench clean and forces you to set it up again.
6. What training can and cannot do
Working memory responds to practice at the right difficulty. Train on a demanding task like n-back and you will get measurably better at it, and at closely related tasks. Whether those gains spread far beyond the trained skills is still debated among researchers, so be wary of anyone promising a general IQ boost. What you can honestly expect: a sharper, more practised workspace, and a clear score that shows it.
