Every day you hold a phone number in your head while you dial it, pick one voice out of a noisy room, and work out whether there is time for one more errand on the way home. Those are cognitive skills, and like most skills they respond to practice. This page covers what brain training is, what the evidence behind it actually supports, and where the limits are.
Brain training means practising a cognitive skill on purpose, at a difficulty that stays a little beyond comfortable. That is the whole idea. A game asking you to track four moving targets at once trains attention the way scales train a pianist’s fingers: by repeating one specific demand often enough, and hard enough, that your performance on it shifts.
The skills worth training are the ones you lean on constantly. Working memory holds information while you are still using it. Attention decides what gets through and what gets filtered out. Processing speed sets how quickly you take something in and react. Perception turns raw input into something meaningful, and reasoning gets you from what you know to a sensible conclusion.
The brain is not fixed once childhood ends. It keeps reorganising itself in response to what you ask of it, strengthening the connections you use often and letting unused ones fade. That property is called neuroplasticity, and it is why a musician’s sense of timing and a translator’s vocabulary look different in the brain from someone who has never practised either.
Neuroplasticity is also why difficulty matters more than time served. A task you can already do on autopilot asks almost nothing of your brain. One that stretches you slightly is the one that produces change, which is why every Mentilus game adjusts to your current level instead of staying where it started.
Cognitive training reliably improves the thing you train. The ACTIVE trial, one of the largest studies in the field, gave older adults ten sessions of training in memory, reasoning or processing speed, and found gains in the trained ability that were still measurable years afterwards (Willis et al., JAMA, 2006).
Transfer is the harder question. Getting faster at a speed task does not automatically make you quicker at everything else, and the research on how far gains spread into untrained everyday tasks is genuinely mixed. Anyone promising that ten minutes of games will prevent dementia has gone well past what the evidence supports, and we are not going to tell you that.
What is reasonable to expect is sharper performance on the kinds of tasks you practise, a clearer picture of your own strong and weak spots, and a short daily habit that keeps you mentally engaged. Sleep, exercise and staying socially and intellectually active matter at least as much, and none of them compete with ten minutes of training.
